Areas of practice
Barristers in Chambers practice in criminal, immigration (and related judicial review), public, employment, State and diplomatic immunity, contract, personal injury, non-contentious probate and licensing law.
Our barristers advise and represent clients:
- in relation to immigration and asylum matters and act for clients at all levels from the First-Tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) to the Supreme Court.
- in relation to employment law and act for clients at all levels from the Employment Tribunal to the Court of Appeal.
- in relation to State and diplomatic immunity and act for clients at all levels from the Tribunals, Magistrates' Courts, County Courts and to the Supreme Court.
- in relation to public law challenges and act for clients at all levels against decisions of the Home Office and the Parole Board from the Upper Tribunal, High Court, Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court.
- in relation to contract law and represent both claimants and defendants facing contractual disputes.
- in relation to personal injury matters and represent both claimants and defendants in claims arising out of personal injury.
- in relation to non-contentious probate matters and represent clients involved in probate actions and administration of estates.
- in relation to licensing matters and act for clients in local authority hearings and in appeals to the Magistrates' Courts.
- in relation to family/matrimonial/children matters and can advise and in appropriate cases represent in the Magistrates’ Courts.

Fees
Barristers in Chambers generally charge on a fixed fee basis for all private work where the clients are not eligible for legal aid.
Barristers can also agree to work on an hourly basis for all private work including public access work which depends on the seniority of call and experience of the individual barrister.

Public Access – Immigration Appeals
If you wish to appeal against an immigration decision of the Home Office our barristers can advise and represent you. Barristers can provide advice on submitting an appeal form, draft an appeal form, draft grounds, draft skeleton arguments all the way to representing you at a hearing in the First-Tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber).
Please note that barristers are not allowed to do legal aid work on a Public Access basis.
You will need to make an informed decision about whether to apply for legal aid or proceed with Public Access.
Timescales
Timescales for our services may vary depending on factors such as a barristers’ availability, the complexity of your case and the need for additional documents. As you generally must appeal a decision within 14 days (from within the United Kingdom) or 28 days (from outside the United Kingdom), please contact the barrister directly as soon as possible. You may also need advice and/or representation at short notice. If so, please contact the barrister who will aim to advise you and/or represent you at a hearing where possible.
Fees
Barristers generally charge on a fixed fee basis which means that we will charge you a set amount of money for the work. Below we provide estimates based on the ranges of fixed fees for barristers practising at Martin Burr Chambers. The fees quoted below are exclusive of VAT, if applicable.
Your fixed fees may vary depending on your needs – for example, your fees may be towards the higher end of the range if you need a more experienced barrister and/or you have a more complex case. If you have a particularly complex case, your fees may also be higher than the estimates below. There are also likely to be additional costs of between £500 to £1,500 for additional work that was outside the provisions of the initial instructions such as providing an additional advice on appeal or representation at appeal.

Preparation of appeal, including conferences with you and assistance with completion of forms, grounds, skeleton arguments – £1,500 - £2,500
Preliminary hearing (in some cases) – £250 - £750

Tribunal appearances per day, after the first day – £750 - £1,500
Stage of case - hourly rates (estimates)
Our barristers can also agree to do work on an hourly basis which depends on their seniority of call and experience which range between £250 per hour to £450 per hour.

Public Access – Motoring Offences (Summary Only)
Our barristers can advise and represent you in court if you are charged with a ‘summary only’ motoring offence. This is a motoring offence which can only be heard in the Magistrates’ Court. For example, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, careless driving, failing to stop or report and speeding.
Please note that barristers are not allowed to do legal aid work on a Public Access basis.
You will need to make an informed decision about whether to apply for legal aid or proceed with Public Access.
Timescales
Timescales for our services may vary depending on factors such as a barristers’ availability, the complexity of your case and the need for additional documents. As a guide, written advice on your case will be available within two to four weeks where possible. You may also need representation at short notice. If so, please contact the individual barrister who will aim to represent you at the hearing where possible.
